Ontario Tech welcomes Indigenous Maya students from Yucatán for summer STEM and English program

The Government of Yucatán (a state of Mexico) has launched an International Mobility Program  providing scholarships for 100 students of Indigenous Maya origin from public higher education institutions in Yucatán. This summer, 24 students, two Education teacher candidates and one teacher have received scholarships to attend Ontario Tech to improve their English and study STEM subjects. In addition, they are participating in cultural and recreational activities including Canada Day celebrations and field trips, one of which is to Niagara Falls.

The scholarship recipients come from 11 municipalities in Yucatán, with 50 per cent awarded to women. Funding for the program comes from fines imposed on political parties by the Yucatán Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute.

In addition to their English classes, students will participate in STEM-related activities including tours and lectures related to game development, robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, networking and cybersecurity, automotive engineering, clean energy, environmental sustainability and climate change.
